Spring Fest -  Quiet Creek Herb Farm's Spring Fest will feature a Diabetes Prevention Discussion and Wild Edibles Walk and Talk

Quiet Creek Herb Farm's Spring Fest will be on Saturday, May 29th, from 10 - 4 pm.

Diabetes, a chronic disease afflicting more than 21 million Americans, is
the topic of a prevention talk that will be given by Captain Martie
Slaughter, Retired, Medical Service Corps, U. S. Navy registered dietitian
and diabetes educator formerly of National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, Saturday, May 29th at 11 a.m. Her talk will focus on diabetes prevention, offering healthy stress management skills, ways to increase physical activity, healthy food choice options, and diabetes risk reduction community initiatives for our youth.  A diabetes preventative luncheon will be available for purchase after her talk.

"When you have diabetes, your body has a problem making or using insulin," said Captain Slaughter recently. "As a result, glucose or sugar, the fuel your body runs on, builds up in your blood and cannot get into your cells.
If blood glucose stays too high it can damage your cells and body organs.
Most people who develop diabetes have pre-diabetes first, which means that blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough for
diabetes. People with pre-diabetes have a higher risk for a heart attack and stroke, as well as diabetes. If you or someone else in your family has
diabetes, other family members may have pre-diabetes and not be aware of it," she said.

At 1 p.m.  Eric Burkhart will lead us on a walk through the farm identifying wild edible and medicinal plants.  He holds degrees in Economic Botany/Ethnobotany (B.A, Idaho State University) and Horticulture (M.S., Penn State University), and is completing a PhD in Forest Resources (PennState University).  A native of the Pittsburgh region, he and his wife Lisa White, a local artisan and homeopathic practitioner, live in Pine Grove Mills, Pennsylvania.

The activities are free of charge and all are welcome to attend.
