_Date is TBA : Preteen/Teen Camp - Environmental Theater Camp

Max von Duerckheim will lead Quiet Creek’s theatre camp by using performance training, workshops and shows to conduct a dialogue with middle-school age youth (10-15 year olds) on the issue of bullying.  This project is a drama-based summer camp, which will take place at Quiet Creek Herb Farm & School of Country Living in Jefferson County in the summer of 2011.  The camp will last two weeks involving a group of local middle-school aged youth with 10 follow-up performances (To Be Determined).  Pennsylvania Council of Arts has supported this incredible opportunity for local youth.  A $25 donation is requested to help supplement healthy snacks and supplies.  Our primary goal is to give young people in local counties the opportunity for personal reflection, expression, and discussion around the issue of bullying.  A pre and post survey, assessment tools, will be given to all theatre campers measuring their knowledge and attitude related to the goals of project.

                                                  _
Max and Quiet Creek’s main theme for the work will be the issue of bullying. As we develop our performance skills, students will be given opportunity to create their own dramatic material through reflection on face-to-face and cyber bullying.  The two weeks will be spent in intensive performing arts training, with a special focus on theatre methods used in social justice work.  30 local middle and high school students will spend time learning and practicing the tools used in Theatre of the Oppressed (referred to as TO below) and Playback Theatre, two dramatic methodologies extensively used for creating discussion and encouraging social change.  The process of developing our work will move through distinct phases.  Initially, we will conduct a stage of learning about each other, using theatre games and activities to develop confidence and performance skills within the group.  Following this period (of a few days), we will begin to look at the issue of bullying by drawing on the personal experiences of participants.  Anyone will be given the opportunity to relate stories from their own lives that are relevant to bullying.  These stories will then be turned into short performances and will be followed by open discussions.  The final phase of the work will aim to create a performance for outside audiences.  Using our own experiences as well as hypothetical situations, we will create dramatic scenes around issues we want to change or examine.  Using these scenes as raw material, we will then conduct performances/workshops using a technique from TO called Forum Theatre, which is extensively used in social-justice orientated theatre, and offers spectators/participants a chance to intervene in the actions they are witnessing and try to change the story towards a more positive outcome.  Essentially, the group will be assessing situations and imagining solutions to problems, as well as spontaneously enacting them on the spot.
-Class Fee: $25 (PA council of the Arts grant)
